“Dedication Makes the Difference”

Welcome to VAVF!

President's Letter, April 2024

I am very sad to report that due to the low registration the 2024 VAVF Workshop in Tampa on April 26, 2024, has been cancelled.

We hope to have the workshops recorded and placed on the VAVF website, www.vavf.org and will notify you when they are available.

Because the Conference was cancelled we will need to have a business meeting via Zoom. Jane Thompson, Past-President, will send an email concerning the sign-on procedure and the date of the meeting.

Please, if possible, attend this meeting. The future of VAVF will be under discussion. Our declining membership and the low registration for the conference is an indication of the problems we are facing.

If you would like anything added to the agenda for the business meeting, please let me know. My email address is below.

On Being a Transcriber

Jonathan Carson

It doesn't end with the braille. Braille is merely the medium, a doorway to both literacy and critical thinking, a portal to higher studies, an invitation to a larger world. Braille is access, inclusion, and empowered potential. The transcriber's core mission is to provide materials that are as accessible to the braille reader as the print material is to the sighted students and open those doorways to possibility... Website update!

Before retiring from the Board, Susie Coleman was our newsletter editor for over 35 years. She dedicated many, many hours to producing our quarterly newsletters- a monumental task. Replacing her seems like an impossible task, one that we have not had success in accomplishing.

With the revision of the website, we are trying a new approach to providing information for our members. Skills articles, annual conference information, membership and donation forms, as well as scholarship details and forms will now be available on our website. Members will receive periodic emails to announce that there is new info on the website. The Communications committee looks forward to your feedback about both our new website and the changes in how we provide the newsletter.
